Tanzania : Our safari to Tanzania, Feb. 15 to 25, included visits to Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and Serengeti National Park. Tarangire National Park has many elephants and birds, as well as the large baobab trees for which it is famous. Ngorongoro Conservation Area contains a 10 mile diameter caldera with 30,000 animals living on the crater floor, as well as the surrounding highlands. Serengeti in Swahili means "endless plains," a huge ecosystem with rock and tree covered oases called kopjes (pronounced "copies") and short and long grass plains. The Serengeti is home to more than one million wildebeest who travel in the Great Migration. At this time of year they were in the southern Serengeti short grass plains and had just given birth enmass to their calves.
